New Family - Top 10 Questions & Answers...

How do I get forgotten items to my child?

You may drop them off at the school office.  Be sure to put your student’s name and room number on the item.  (A great resource for parents is the SPX binder, which includes the Family Directory/Class Lists section.  Here you will find students’ family names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, class lists, and room numbers.)

What are Math Games and IRDA?

•Math Games:  Students in grades K-5 meet weekly to practice their math skills in a fun and positive learning environment.   Parent volunteers help facilitate the sessions, or help answer students’ questions.  You can sign up to volunteer for math games at Back-to-School Night.

Field trips (1/2 day, full day, lunch; how many parents go and do they have to drive?)

Each field trip is unique, and times will vary.  The teachers or Room Liaison will notify you in advance of upcoming field trip details (e.g. location, time, chaperones, etc.)  Parents are encouraged to chaperone at least one field trip each year.   It’s a great chance to participate in your child’s day, get to know the teachers, and meet some other parents!   Due to the new booster seat law, St. Pius will use buses this year rather than parent drivers for transportation on field trips.

At which grade do the students get to participate in CYO sports?

Generally, students can begin CYO sports in 4th grade.  There are a few sports in which the students can participate prior to 4th grade:  Wrestling, Track, Football , cheerleading
Many students participate in local area sports, such as AYBS (Allisonville Youth Baseball and Softball), Glendale Soccer, Northside Baptist basketball and cheerleading), etc.   Watch the Purple & Gold Rush for sign-up information throughout the school year.

Do volunteers need to check in at the office?  What is a background check and what is the workshop volunteers are supposed to attend?

Background checks are required by the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, and the Child Protection Policy Form must be on file in the parish office before you can volunteer in the school.  The Background Checks are valid for 5 years.  Forms are available in the school office.  The workshop/training that volunteers are required to attend is called Virtus.  Everyone who comes into contact with children is required to attend a training session.  To learn more and to register for a session, visit www.virtus.org.

Morning drop-off.  (North and South parking lots)

Use the South parking lot (main entrance) when dropping off your carpool in the morning.  Use the North parking lot (playground entrance) if you need to park your car to walk a child in to school, or go into the school for other business.  After 8:00am, the North doors are locked and you will need to enter the school at the main doors.

How do I order School Lunch for my child(ren)?

The easiest way to order school lunch, and refer to your order, is on our website:  www.spxparish.org and click on the school lunch link.  Keep in mind any field trips scheduled during the month (sometimes the field trip includes lunch).  You can change your order until the deadline listed on the computer.  Each student has his or her own order form.  When you’ve ordered for all of your students, you print a summary page and send it to school with your payment in the envelope provided by the school lunch committee.  Very simple!

What is SCRIP?

SCRIP is an awesome way to save money and it’s incredibly simple to use!   You can order scrip on-line by midnight every Monday through the parish website:  www.spxparish.org and click on order scrip now.   Remember to print your confirmation and to submit your payment by Tuesday morning via the take home envelope.  If your order is received by Monday at midnight it will be included in the weekly order and sent home to you with your youngest child on Friday.  New order forms are posted on Tuesdays and can be added to and subtracted from up until Monday night.   There are over 100 merchants on the form (restaurants, grocery, clothing, travel, car maintenance, book stores, electronics, music, movies, video stores, specialty stores, and home improvement stores).  Each vendor has a percentage listed of what you pay that goes back to the school.
